"What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast"

Recently I listened to What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast by Laura Vanderkam. She discussed the three things successful people do before breakfast, one of which is taking time to "nurture yourself." The author's research concluded that people who work out in the mornings are more likely to stick with it. She also detailed how we only have a certain amount of willpower each day, and if we work out at night then we may run out of that willpower, or, more likely, something unexpected will come up that will prevent us from working out. On Monday, I went to the 6:30 am hot barre class at Studio South. Although waking up was difficult, once I was awake it was quite easy to find the willpower to head to class. At the end of the day, my mind often wanders during my workout to the tasks that I have yet to complete for the day. As the minutes tick by, I am acutely aware that time is running out to get what I need to do done. When I returned from my early morning class, however, I had the whole day to knock out my to do list. Working out first thing in the morning may not be for everyone, but I encourage you to try it. I'd be willing to bet it will change your life for the better.

No Matter Your Love Language, Yoga Is For You

Have you heard of the 5 Love Languages? They are five ways that people express and experience love.  If not, it’s worth taking a look at what love language you identify with, as well as which love language those around you do. Check out this website and discover your love language: https://www.5lovelanguages.com .  Once you’ve figured out your love language, keep reading for a reminder of why yoga is you showing that love language to yourself.

Words of Affirmation

During a yoga class, the instructor will give encouraging feedback, as well as sometimes saying mantras like “You are strong.” If your love language is words of affirmation, actually listen when the instructor says, say a thank you to yourself for getting yourself to your mat today. For you, those words affirming that what you’re doing is right are important.

Acts of Service

For those whose love language is acts of service, actions are what is important. The action of bringing yourself to the studio and the physical action of improving your mind and body through yoga are an act of service showing love to yourself.

Receiving Gifts

The mental and physical benefits from your practice are a gift you are giving yourself. If that’s not enough, Studio South is also a member of Perkville, so the more times you practice, the closer you get to receiving gifts from the studio :)

Quality Time

People who express and experience love through quality time relish undivided attention. A yoga practice is an hour (or longer) a day that you dedicate exclusively to yourself.

Physical Touch

Some people value physical touch most of all. This one may be the most obvious for yoga, but your practice improves your body from toning to flexibility through physical touch.

No matter which love language you identify with most, yoga can play a part in you expressing love for yourself.

Namaste y’all!

How intentional is your intention?

It's that time of year again....the cool air begins to settle in....time for fires, warm coats, and toy catalogs!  Do you remember the old Sears Catalog?  I loved it's arrival...with it's heavy weight and smell of fresh paper.  I would circle every thing that I thought I remotely would like to see Santa deliver come Christmas morning.

Yesterday the Target Toy Catalog arrived and my children descended on it in similar fashion.  My daughter in very similar fashion to my own technique circled everything that did not move.  Anything pink, purple, or girlie!  My son on the other hand crossed out a ton, narrowed the field of toys down to a few, and then finally concluded that he just wanted this one particular robot.  I bet you know how this story goes....he'll get the robot.  He was precise.

Intentions are very similar to the toy lists.  When we are specific about our intention we are much more likely to see it come to fruition.  For instance....one intention may be that we want our focus to be contentment.  That's great and can come in lots of forms but we could be more precise by saying which areas of our lives we would like to see contentment.  Perhaps we would like to be content with our yoga practice or content with our relationship with food or another individual.

What is your intention?  Are you circling it with a big red magic marker or flagging the entire catalog?

Why consistency counts....

Why does it feel like I am living Ground Hog's Day with Bill Murray over and over again when I take Hot Yoga ???  Good news you are on the right path!  Our Studio South Hot Yoga sequence is therapeutically designed to take your body through it's full range of motion in a safe and extremely effective manner.  When students first come to practice on a regular basis they may begin to notice how similar the structure of Hot Yoga class is from one to teacher to the next .....

That's great news!  By keeping it consistent you can focus on the true intent of yoga which is to move inward, not outward.  If the poses are the same you are able to listen to your body, noticing the differences that each new day brings.  Are you tighter or more open on one side than the other.  You begin to bring a new awareness to each movement and before you know it that "same" pose begins to evolve and feel totally different.  This leads to growth both on the mat and off.

A consistent format can also help to avoid injury.  Think about your yoga practice like a science experiment....let me take you back to your grade school days of hypothesis, and variable, and constant....the physical postures are your constant.  By keeping your practice regular and steady you are able to form hypothesis about your body.

Take this little experiment for example:

Scenario:  You practice Hot Yoga on a regular basis (3 or more times a week).  You also enjoying gardening.

Hypothesis:  Gardening causes my shoulders to tighten and decreases my range of motion.  By practicing Hot Yoga I can maintain my range of motion and avoid injury.

Constant:  Hot Yoga Practice.

Variable:  A day spent gardening

Result:  Since you practice yoga on a regular basis you know your body and it's full range of motion.  You also notice that the days following a gardening session, your right shoulder is tighter than normal.  Rather than continue to tighten the shoulder during yoga practice you focus on loosening it up, perhaps by adjusting your normal poses.  But you are able to work on your range of motion and prevent a tight shoulder from becoming an injured shoulder.  All because you were able to compare how you typically feel in a pose versus how you feel after gardening.

Clearly....I am not a scientist...and Mr. Davis, my high school science teacher, may demand a retest, but you get the point, right?  Keeping your practice steady allows you to go deeper inward listening to your body....afterall isn't that the goal????

Namaste Y'all,
Katy

Admit It, You Think Yoga Is Only For Women

We understand that a lot of men think yoga is only for women, but I’m here to bust the myth.

Yoga is for everyone.

We mean it. Men and women. Young and old. Flexible and inflexible. Yoga is for everyone willing to try it.

Real Men Do Yoga.

At Studio South, we have two wonderful male yoga instructors, Felix Vlad and Paul Crapol. They join the ranks of many male celebrities who swear by yoga including:

Matthew McConaughey

Belle Pictures/Flynetonline.com

Orlando Bloom

Boaz

Robert Downey Jr.

ODuran/Fame Pictures

And many more… but I get it, you’re thinking, “only women care about which celebrities do yoga.”  Fair enough. How about the brave men who serve our country? Soldiers do yoga to stay physically and mentally fit.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/12/military-ptsd-yoga_n_2273524.html

Yoga is just as beneficial for men as for women.

Yoga keeps you fit, flexible, relaxed and healthy. There’s always something new to learn. It’s beneficial for both your mind, and your body.

For more benefits, check out these articles on yoga benefits for men: https://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/eat-run/2014/05/28/7-benefits-of-yoga-for-men

Yoga is challenging.

https://detroit.cbslocal.com/2013/11/08/once-reluctant-nfl-players-say-yoga-is-not-just-for-girls-anymore/

Some may think yoga is easy, but even NFL players admit that it’s difficult. Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson said of his first yoga class, “I was like, ‘I need to get up and walk out of here,’ but my pride wouldn’t let me walk out before everybody  else, so I just sat in the back and acted like I was pulling the moves off, but they … knew I was messing up...I knew there was a good chance that I wasn’t going to be able to do everything in there, but I had no idea how tough it was. Other athletes would say, hey, it’s tough. But it was a lot tougher than I expected.” Did I mention Russell Wilson does yoga?

If these professional athletes think it’s tough, I assure you that you will too.

So, do you think you can compete with celebrities, soldiers, and professional football players? I'll see you on the yoga mat.... if you're man enough.

Namaste y’all!

Start Your Day at Studio South

Morning workouts are underestimated. Yes, dragging yourself out of bed at 6 am (or earlier!) is tough, but each time I make the effort to do it, I feel better all day long. You have a couple of options at Studio South:

On Monday & Wendesday, we offer HOT BARRE from 6:30 am - 7:15 am.

Hot barre is a great morning option because it’s a quick 45 minute workout that, while tough, leaves you feeling refreshed. As soon as I finish hot barre in the morning, I’m always eager to start my day. I have more energy all day long. Like many people, I have the hardest time getting up on Mondays. I find that when I make the effort to get to class before work on Monday morning, it sets the tone for a great week.

On Tuesday & Thursday we offer HOT YOGA from 6:30 am - 7:30 am

Hot Yoga is great on Tuesday and Thursday because it refocuses you amidst a stressful week. While my biggest challenge on Monday is usually getting up in the morning, after the week has started, I already feel like I need a break. Early morning hot yoga is my time to clear my head. By the time I get to work, I feel ready to focus on the big day ahead of me.

And on Friday, treat yourself to a morning off :)

If you haven’t before, try an early morning class at the studio. It’ll start your day out on the right foot. I promise!

So You Think You Can't Take the Heat?

Are you intimidated by hot barre or hot yoga? I understand, but I promise you can handle it. Don’t be afraid of the heat - it’s actually protecting your muscles. Our heating system is superb; it purifies the air, making it the healthiest environmental air quality available, it keeps the air moisturized, without being too humid,  and it even ups the number of  calories burned!

Here are some tips to help you beat the heat:

1. Put ice cubes in your water

Don’t forget your water, and take it one step further by adding ice cubes to your water bottle. The water will get lukewarm during class even if it starts out cold and ice cubes are a great way to make sure you have something refreshing to drink. Keep in mind that while the instructor will generally mention times that are a great point to take a drink, you’re welcome to do so whenever you like.

2. Eat Beforehand

Always have something to eat beforehand, even if it’s something small. I usually try to eat a handful of trail mix or a granola bar on my drive over. This will prevent you from feeling shaky -even during the toughest parts of class.

3. Resist the urge to step outside

During my first hot yoga class, I was dying to take a break outside. In my experience, going outside isn’t a refreshing break from the class; it just makes it more difficult when I return. The big wave of cool air that comes after being in the heat for so long can even make you feel lightheaded! I prefer to stick it out and enjoy the cool down that takes place at the end of class.

4. But that doesn’t mean don’t take a break…

Know your limits. When we say we won’t judge you for taking a break, we mean it. Treat yourself to a break with child’s pose whenever you like. Scale poses back if you need to. Walk it out at the barre if you need a break. Not every side will feel the same and neither will every day. Honor today’s practice - there’s no shame in taking a breather.

5. Every day will be different

No matter how many hot yoga or hot barre classes you take, some days will be tougher than others. By practicing consistently, you’ll be able to see the changes from day to day. Taking note of these changes in the way you feel will allow you to improve your practice and avoid injury.

6. And if all else fails...know that a cool cloth is headed for your forehead in shavasana.

Week 5: The glass is just a glass

The Glass Is Half Full
by Paul Crapol

“Cheer up, it’s not so bad!” It seems that someone is always willing to say that whenever we’re walking down the street, absorbed in our thoughts. “Look on the bright side,” they encourage us.

Of course, that kind someone has probably just inherited an obscene sum of money or won the largest Powerball jackpot ever last Tuesday. Easy for them to say, “Cheer up” – their most difficult decision of the day is whether to buy or lease their new robot butler.

But sometimes it turns out that the kind soul reaching out to us is someone who practices yoga. And they really do look on the bright side (or at least not on the dark side), regardless of what happens in life.

Plain and simple, the regular practice of yoga helps our outlook on life. When we practice yoga, we don’t run away and hide from the thoughts, sensations, and emotions that run through our minds. Rather, we are encouraged to just “stay with” whatever arises. Without judgment and, as much as possible, without the knee-jerk reactions that have become ingrained habits. Using this mindfulness, we soon see how often we automatically attach labels of “good” or “bad” to just about everything that arises in our lives.

Yoga practice helps us to take a moment and just breathe before we react. Yoga can’t stop xy,or from happening, but it can help us in how we respond to xy, and z. Over time, that negative “self-talk” we all know so well loosens its grip a bit and we can engage with whatever we’re thinking and feeling. So, when that proverbial glass of water arises in our lives, we can unattach from the immediate reactions of “half empty” or “half full” and just see it for what it is: A glass of water.
Paul Crapol is a wonderful part of our Studio South Family.  He brings a balanced voice that is full of warmth and compassion to all those he comes in contact with.  He teaches Hot Yoga and Hot Flow.  He is also a professional writer.
