The Circle at Studio South

Beginning Tuesday June 7th and then the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm, we will hold this community drumming circle. Lead by Sandy Layman..you can bring your own drum or borrow one of ours. The event is FREE and open to all ages. We do ask you to consider a donation as we support a different local charity each month to fill our "Love Tub".

"At the heart of using drum circles in a conscious way is the idea that through group music making, we can rediscover the truth our ancestors knew so well; The transformation power of group support, engagement and connection". ~ Jim Donovan

Our local charity for our first Circle at Studio South is FISH Inc.
Help us fill the bellies of local families in need by bringing non-perishable items to The Circle on June 7.
Donations can be made here.
While this event is free, sign up today so we can save you a spot.

Hope to see you there!

Local Love - Monday, May 30, 2016

My oh my it's the middle of May!  Before we know it, it will be Memorial Day.

Don't worry the rest of this email is not in rhyme....I'm not that good.  My husband and I are currently building a house....insert plenty of discussions on earth shattering topics such as paint colors, septic systems, and all things farmhouse.  Back in April we were having our initial meeting with the heating and air conditioning contractors.  We were preparing to go out of town for a week and if you've ever built a house you automatically assume that nothing will happen when you're out of town.  Something along the lines of cats away, mice will play.

I'm happy to report that didn't happen thanks to the gentlemen on the job, but during this one meeting prior to our trip, I was walked through the house by a gentle giant named Gabe.  He took ownership in a great way of the project referring things he would or had done in his own house.  He made me feel not only comfortable but also like he truly cared.

Fast forward several weeks to the morning of April 17th, when Gabe was shopping for donuts for his very pregnant wife at our local Farm Fresh right down the road.  The same grocery store that myself and many members of our community visit.  That morning was different though because that morning Gabe was shot randomly 5 times by another shopper.

As the weeks have gone on I've read more and more stories about Gabe that fit right in line with the little glimpse of his personality that I saw during our meeting.  A family man, who was willing to do anything for anybody keeps coming through.  Gabe served in the military and his wife still serves.  He leaves behind a young daughter and within the last week his wife, Kristy has given birth to their other daughter.

The shock won't wear off but I propose we do what we can this Memorial Day.  Not only let us remember those who died serving our country in the line of duty, but to honor and remember Gabe Maness, who served our country and died randomly taking care of his family.

On Monday, May 30th from 4-6pm we will host Gabe Maness Memorial Monday.

Lululemon is coming on down from Richmond for a pop-up shop.  Part of the proceeds will go directly to the Maness family.  In addition between now and then we will be collecting diapers for Kristy Maness and her new baby.

On Monday (Memorial Day) afternoon we will also have a community lovingkindness/metta meditation taught by Amy Anderson at 4:30pm and a community flow class taught by Cindy Crace at the same time.  Instead of payment we ask that the community consider making donations of diapers, dollars, and/or prayers for the Maness family.

We can't change the events that happened on April 17th but we can spread the word about what a great man, father, and citizen, Gabe Maness was.  Please come out and help us support this family in our community, spreading the love locally.

Lots of Love,
Katy & Crew

20 Things To Start Doing

We could not agree more with the things listed above. How many of you go throughout the day rushing from one thing to the next. If you are lucky, you throw in an amazing workout class that re-centers you, but as soon as the teacher stops speaking and you blink your eyes back open from Savasana, you are back to your to do lists and it feels like you never took that break to shut down. What break?!

Looking at the list above, there are more than a couple things we would like to add to our daily, weekly, monthly routine... a bike ride (warmer weather we love you), go to bed earlier (that one loud of laundry can wait until the morning) and listening to more music! (Dance party anyone?)

What 1 thing are you going to start doing?

2, 4, 6, 8, who do we APPRECIATE?!!

YOU! That's who!!

April showers might bring May flowers but April also brings an awareness of all the things, people, and places that we appreciate.  Patanjali, the ancient yoga philosopher who wrote the guiding principles that are still followed today knew way back when that this whole appreciation thing was of the utmost importance.  Patanjali put special importance on the observance (Niyama) of contentment, referred to as Santosha in Sanskrit, or finding appreciation for what is.

Swami Rama writes that Santosha is " falling in love with life".  So this makes me wonder are we falling in love with our lives on this very day?  Right here, right now, as I sit writing to you in my pajamas before even washing my face, I know I could do a better job.  Appreciation, contentment, and gratitude are just like muscles.  To meet their maximum potential they must be practiced, worked, and utilized.

Journals for gratitude, meditating on what you are appreciative of today, or being intentional with how you say thank you to the world are a few ways.  But what about all the things that we forget are wonderful.  Like the fact that I have running water to wash my face with and all the men and women who years before me laid the ground work to have plumbing brought to my house.  Or that I have a roof over my head???

Appreciation isn't about our expectations being met .  It's about dropping those expectations and finding the perfect in the present.  That way when life hands us tough obstacles we can work to find the good, the appreciation, the bliss.

Today I'm appreciative for the little girl in the picture above.  That's my Gracie.  At almost 7 years old she took her first adult yoga class last night (Yin with Cindy) and did Ommmmazing.  As a mama, I was worried...will she be able to find stillness, will she talk during class, is she going to scream that she's bored during Savasana?  Half way through she grabbed my hand and gave it a squeeze followed with a smile.  For her, this day, and that moment, I am so appreciative.  What are you appreciative for?  As you focus on this month's theme be sure to tag us in your social media posts with #appreciationaprilss

We're so appreciative of you and aim to serve you to the highest potential.  If we can be of help, please let us know.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Lots of Love,

Katy & Crew

April Appreciation

This month we kicked off with April Appreciation. #appreciationapril!

We loved all your #marchmotivation posts and the determination we're seeing from our Spring Challenge participants and we thought it much needed to complement all your hard work with some good and simple APPRECIATION for the little things.

The Shavasanas, the cool cloths, the sips of water, the breath...this month is the time for YOU to appreciate YOUR wonderful unique selves and all that life (and your practice at Studio South) has to offer!

Make A Wish ...

Studio South is 3!

How is it possible that 3 years have flown by in such an amazing fashion?  It seems like just yesterday I was dreaming up a studio that was a 2nd home for our community, a non-judgmental, welcoming, first rate studio where happiness could be spread through yoga and barre. I wonder how many business plans put their mission as "spread happiness". Well, we did! And dreams really do come true!

Thank you for dreaming and motivating us all along the way. You motivate all of us each and every time you walk through the doors.  Sharing your time, energy, and love. This is your space and we are your people!

This month we are dedicating our mission to motivation!
What motivates you?
Is it the way you feel post savasana?
Is it how strong you feel?
Is it happiness and well being?
Is it an extra pep in your step?
Whatever it is, lets celebrate!

Last week our barre students wrote out their motivations pre-class. These can be seen on the board in studio 2.  This week it's all about the yoga.  Take a moment to share motivational words and wisdom after class and we'll share with the world next week.

Together we can move mountains with our motivation!  Thank you, thank you, thank you for the last 3 years and the many more to come!!

Lots of Love,
Katy & Crew

Real Men Do Yoga

During baseball's off season what do players do? We have been fortunate to have two pro players spending their downtime with us at Studio South. Last week they took our Restorative yoga with our very own Katy.

Left to Right: Mark Montgomery, plays for the Yankees. Katy. Ryan Hissey, plays for the Blue Jays.

Not only do professional baseball players love yoga, but these celebrities have enjoyed the many benefits of yoga.

Matthew McConaughey is not only a regular in a yoga studio, but can also be found on the beach getting in a killer yoga session. Matthew's yoga practice is one main reason why he looks so good without a shirt on. A regular yoga practice helps keep body fat low and contributes to a lean, muscular body.

Robert Downey Jr. wouldn't have thought twice about yoga back in the 90s, but now the actor does yoga consistently. He has been spotted practicing yoga outside of his trailer on movie sets. It has taught him how to be fit, mellow and balanced.

So men, what are you waiting for?

We'll see you on the mat!
