Admit It, You Think Yoga Is Only For Women

We understand that a lot of men think yoga is only for women, but I’m here to bust the myth.

Yoga is for everyone.

We mean it. Men and women. Young and old. Flexible and inflexible. Yoga is for everyone willing to try it.

Real Men Do Yoga.

At Studio South, we have two wonderful male yoga instructors, Felix Vlad and Paul Crapol. They join the ranks of many male celebrities who swear by yoga including:

Matthew McConaughey

Orlando Bloom

Boaz

Robert Downey Jr.

ODuran/Fame Pictures

And many more… but I get it, you’re thinking, “only women care about which celebrities do yoga.”  Fair enough. How about the brave men who serve our country? Soldiers do yoga to stay physically and mentally fit.

Yoga is just as beneficial for men as for women.

Yoga keeps you fit, flexible, relaxed and healthy. There’s always something new to learn. It’s beneficial for both your mind, and your body.

Yoga is challenging.

Some may think yoga is easy, but even NFL players admit that it’s difficult. Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson said of his first yoga class, “I was like, ‘I need to get up and walk out of here,’ but my pride wouldn’t let me walk out before everybody  else, so I just sat in the back and acted like I was pulling the moves off, but they … knew I was messing up...I knew there was a good chance that I wasn’t going to be able to do everything in there, but I had no idea how tough it was. Other athletes would say, hey, it’s tough. But it was a lot tougher than I expected.” Did I mention Russell Wilson does yoga?

If these professional athletes think it’s tough, I assure you that you will too.

So, do you think you can compete with celebrities, soldiers, and professional football players? I'll see you on the yoga mat.... if you're man enough.

Namaste y’all!

Start Your Day at Studio South

Morning workouts are underestimated. Yes, dragging yourself out of bed at 6 am (or earlier!) is tough, but each time I make the effort to do it, I feel better all day long. You have a couple of options at Studio South:

On Monday & Wendesday, we offer HOT BARRE from 6:30 am - 7:15 am.

Hot barre is a great morning option because it’s a quick 45 minute workout that, while tough, leaves you feeling refreshed. As soon as I finish hot barre in the morning, I’m always eager to start my day. I have more energy all day long. Like many people, I have the hardest time getting up on Mondays. I find that when I make the effort to get to class before work on Monday morning, it sets the tone for a great week.

On Tuesday & Thursday we offer HOT YOGA from 6:30 am - 7:30 am

Hot Yoga is great on Tuesday and Thursday because it refocuses you amidst a stressful week. While my biggest challenge on Monday is usually getting up in the morning, after the week has started, I already feel like I need a break. Early morning hot yoga is my time to clear my head. By the time I get to work, I feel ready to focus on the big day ahead of me.

And on Friday, treat yourself to a morning off :)

If you haven’t before, try an early morning class at the studio. It’ll start your day out on the right foot. I promise!

So You Think You Can't Take the Heat?

Are you intimidated by hot barre or hot yoga? I understand, but I promise you can handle it. Don’t be afraid of the heat - it’s actually protecting your muscles. Our heating system is superb; it purifies the air, making it the healthiest environmental air quality available, it keeps the air moisturized, without being too humid,  and it even ups the number of  calories burned!

Here are some tips to help you beat the heat:

1. Put ice cubes in your water

Don’t forget your water, and take it one step further by adding ice cubes to your water bottle. The water will get lukewarm during class even if it starts out cold and ice cubes are a great way to make sure you have something refreshing to drink. Keep in mind that while the instructor will generally mention times that are a great point to take a drink, you’re welcome to do so whenever you like.

2. Eat Beforehand

Always have something to eat beforehand, even if it’s something small. I usually try to eat a handful of trail mix or a granola bar on my drive over. This will prevent you from feeling shaky -even during the toughest parts of class.

3. Resist the urge to step outside

During my first hot yoga class, I was dying to take a break outside. In my experience, going outside isn’t a refreshing break from the class; it just makes it more difficult when I return. The big wave of cool air that comes after being in the heat for so long can even make you feel lightheaded! I prefer to stick it out and enjoy the cool down that takes place at the end of class.

4. But that doesn’t mean don’t take a break…

Know your limits. When we say we won’t judge you for taking a break, we mean it. Treat yourself to a break with child’s pose whenever you like. Scale poses back if you need to. Walk it out at the barre if you need a break. Not every side will feel the same and neither will every day. Honor today’s practice - there’s no shame in taking a breather.

5. Every day will be different

No matter how many hot yoga or hot barre classes you take, some days will be tougher than others. By practicing consistently, you’ll be able to see the changes from day to day. Taking note of these changes in the way you feel will allow you to improve your practice and avoid injury.

6. And if all else fails...know that a cool cloth is headed for your forehead in shavasana.
